Goals of Prenatal Care

1. To develop a trusting relationship with the mother and family and encourage them to make informed choices for the pregnancy and birth.
2. The midwife to develop a relationship with the baby, and the baby a relationship with the midwife.
3. Support and encourage the mother and families healthy psychological adjustment to pregnancy, birth and parenting.
4. To promote a healthy social awareness of the sociological factors that influence parenting and child bearing.
5. To monitor the progress of pregnancy in order to promote the maternal health and normal fetal development.
6. To recognize deviation from the normal and provide management or treatment as required.
7. To support and encourage the mother in her journey towards becoming emotionally and physically prepared for her birth.
8. To support and encourage the mother in her choice to breastfeed.
